THE BENEFITS OF DRINKING WATER

Common questions our coaches ask their clients in the gym is “do you drink much water?”

Most answers are “NO” and that they find it hard to drink water.  It’s boring…

We know if it was a wine or gin, we could drink 2 litres no problem but that’s not the way forward… only sideways!

Below are reasons we should drink water, and the benefits it has on our body…

BOOSTS PERFORMANCE DURING EXERCISE

Not staying hydrated can affect your physical performance.  If you do intense training water is very important, getting dehydrated and training can lead to reduced motivation, increased fatigue and make you feel that exercising is more difficult, both physically and mentally.

So, if you are training and you tend to sweat, staying hydrated can help you perform your absolute best.

WEIGHT LOSS

Drinking plenty of water can help weight loss, if it is consumed instead of sweetened juices and sodas.  Drinking water before meals can prevent overeating and create a sense of fullness.

Some evidence suggests that increasing water intake can promote weight loss by slightly increasing your metabolism, this would then increase the number of calories burnt each day.

PREVENTS CONSTIPATION

The bowel needs water to work properly.  Dehydration can lead to digestive problems and constipation.

Drinking more water, especially for those who suffer constipation would help prevent it.

PREVENTS KIDNEY DAMAGE

Insufficient water intake can lead to kidney stones and other problems.  Increased water intake means more urine will be flushed through the kidneys which appears to reduce the risk of kidney stones.

MAY HELP PREVENT OR TREAT HEADACHES

Getting dehydrated can trigger headaches and migraines in some people.  A headache is one of the most common symptoms of being dehydrated.

IMPORTANT FOR SKIN HEALTH

Not drinking enough water can make our skin dry and dehydrated.  Also can cause premature wrinkling (we don’t want that) Staying hydrated is a great way to help our skin look and feel healthy.

Ultimately, not drinking a lot of water each day can affect you mentally and physically. Make it a goal for yourselves to try and drink up to 2 litres of water daily as this is one of the best things we can do for our health.
